After close consultation with public transportation purchasing managers from a number of different countries at the Sixth annual edition of UITP (The International Association of Public Transport) Asia Pacific Region, VNU Exhibitions Shanghai organized the first ever visiting public transportation purchasing delegation from India to Shanghai on November 22nd 2010. During this trip, the Indian visiting delegation visited two Chinese bus manufacturers – Sunlong Bus and Sunwin Bus. Made up of eight different members from various Indian provinces and cities including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, New Delhi and Mumbai among others, this group is tasked with a leading role in purchasing public transportation vehicles for the Indian public transport.
India has consistently remained one of the most densely populated countries in the world, second only in population to China. This closely concentrated urban population has lead to an increasingly pressing need for public transportation vehicles; with a public transportation market even larger than China’s. In recent years, the Indian transportation market has begun to liberalize and open itself up to Chinese trade and investment. In the process, India hopes that Chinese produced buses will be able to augment the needs of the Indian public transportation fleet. On November 22nd, the Indian delegation urged the entire Chinese bus industry to take the next step forward in expanding business opportunities in the Indian market. Said one member of the Indian purchasing delegation, “now is the time to invest in the Indian bus market”.
The Indian public transport purchasing delegation also paid a visit to the Shanghai Municipal Government - Department of Transportation Monday; engaging in a series of extensive talks with relevant officials regarding recent developments in the field of urban transportation.
