The first new trolleybus for the Bulgarian city of Varna has recently completed technical trials on the local network in Plzeň, Czech Republic, where it was built in the Skoda factory. The delivery of the entire series of 30 type 26Tr two-axle buses is expected to commence in May and to be completed by late 2014.

The vehicles for Varna are part of a joint order from the municipal operators of the four cities of Stara Zagora, Varna, Burgas und Pleven. In total, hundred type 26Tr buses are being produced under the lead of Skoda Electric, which uses a Polish Solaris body as a basis structure. The buses are partly subsidized by the EU.

All buses are technically the same, the only variations being livery colours and interior seating arrangements, which were individually specified by the four different operators. The type 26Tr trolleybuses will replace all older Skoda 14Tr units in Varna. Retained in service are the 15Tr articulated trolleybuses.
