In April, 2011, Zhongtong held a grand ceremony to mark the laying of the foundations of its new energy bus production base. One month later, Zhongtong New Energy Bus Project was listed on Shandong Province’s first list of provincial strategic emerging industries. In 2011, Zhongtong ranked the fifth in China in terms of its bus sales. In 2013, the company moved up to the fourth place. Last year, it made its way to the third place. Moreover, the sales of Zhongtong’s new energy buses ranked the second place in China among all bus makers.
At the end of 2014, Zhongtong moved to its new production base, which covers an area of 1,500 mu and is able to produce 30,000 energy-saving and new energy buses. Currently, the production of new energy buses has already taken up over half of the company’s entire business.
At Zhongtong’s General Assembly Workshop, Li Dusheng, Director of Brand Promotion Department of Zhongtong, is proudly introducing his company to visitors, telling them that those light electric buses with less than 20 seats are for customers in Zaozhuang, those large electric buses are bought by customers from Qingdao, and those hybrid double-deckers are to be exported to the Arabic area.
Since the start of this year, Zhongtong has seen a sharp increase in its sales of new energy buses. After the provincial government has rolled out detailed policies of financial supports for purchasing new energy buses in April this year, Liaocheng, Jining, Zibo and Weifang have all placed their orders for environmentally friendly buses.
As early as 2004, Zhongtong set the R&D of new energy buses as its most important development strategy. As one of the participants of the first new energy bus project of National 863 Technological Development Initiative launched by China’s Ministry of Science & Technology, Zhongtong has taken part in the development of hybrid buses and have produced China’s first generation new energy buses. In 2008, Zhongtong signed an agreement with Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee and eleven Zhongtong electric buses were put into operation to serve tourists at various Olympic competition venues, such as the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube. The emission-free Zhongtong electric buses have made significant contributions to the capital’s green urban public transportation drive.
