On November 7 to 8, the First International Fuel Cell Vehicle Congress (FCVC) was held in Beijing. Hosted by China Automobile Engineering Association, FCVC this year is themed with “Build Consensus and Enhance Mutual Development”. During the two-day event, participants held heated discussions and exchanged views on many issues, such as fuel cell (FC) engine technology, hydrogen energy and hydrogen refuel facilities, FC vehicle testing and standards.

One of the biggest stars at this year’s FCVC is Foton’s 8.5-meter FC bus, the first commercial hydrogen FC bus in the world. Without storage batteries, Foton FC bus is powered by a new power system with the electrochemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen. In the whole process, no combustion or mechanic wear occurs. Moreover, only electricity, heat and water are produced while the vehicle is operation. With ten minutes refill of hydrogen, Foton FC bus is able to drive 500 kilometers continuously. Its state-of-art dry film technology enables the vehicle to start smoothly at minus 20 degrees. Its unique Foton Zhike Intelligent Vehicle Management System help bus operators realize more intelligent bus operation and offer more intelligent services for passengers.

In May 2016, Foton AUV secured an order of 100 units 8.5-meter FC buses, marking a new milestone in the company’s history and ushering a new era of the commercialization of FC buses in the whole world.

Compared with fossil fuel powered buses and electric buses, FC buses not only achieve zero emission standards, but also cut noise level to the minimum and realize more stable performances and higher energy efficiency. With such alluring benefits, Foton started researching and developing hydrogen fuel cell buses in 2006 together with Tsinghua University and SinoHytec. In 2013, Foton and SinoHytec joined hands in developing hydrogen fuel cell logistic vehicles. In 2014, Foton rolled out five units second-generation 12-meter hydrogen fuel cell buses, cutting their production costs enormously and at the same time greatly improving the life expectancy of fuel cells. To date, Foton has already set up AUV and Aumark FC Vehicle Production Bases, forming a comprehensive industrial chain for R&D, production and sale of FC buses.
